The people of the town of Tlacolula de Matamoros are kind and lively, The town is comprised of approximately 5,000 Spanish & Zapotecan mestizos.
They have a large attendance to their Sunday Farmer's Market or, simply, el mercado. There the villagers are joined not only by folks from the various towns in a 50 mile radius, but by their own neighbors in the hills, who are mostly Zapotecan or Zapotecan origin.
Tlacolula's root word is Tlaco, which is a Sun god. There are deeply religious (Christian) folks who where necklaces with the image of a sun.
It's a lot like the book, Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya where the people are Christian but the Mary they pray to is much like the Goddess from their ancient relgions.
It's a way in which, in my opinion, Zapotecan people rebelled against their Spanish "conquers" by maintaining their old religion through the lens of their new one: Christianity.
